Car Key Not Working?

Have you ever had your car key stop working? If you cannot get in your car, or you have an ignition key that isn’t working, it means you need professional help. A professional locksmith can create a new car that works. Certain cars do have specific key making requirements, which may rely on dealer-specific requirements. If you have keyless entry, you can still gain help with a new key fob that is reprogrammed. Here are a few other reasons why car keys stop working:

  • Dead key fob. Try changing the battery to see if it opens the car again.
  • Key won’t turn. How old are the keys? The reason why you may need a new key is because the key has been worn out over the years from being used. Keys fall on the ground and over time they can chip, bend, and break. Call our office if you need a car key replacement.
  • Key isn’t programmed. Some key fobs will reset themselves and need to be reprogrammed. A simple Youtube search can help you learn to program it again. However, we can provide key programming if needed.

Hiring a locksmith to rekey or replace locks is one of the best ways to ensure your home is safe. Real estate agents often work directly with locksmiths to replace locks on an entire home prior to it’s selling date to ensure the new homeowners they are the only people with keys to the home. If you have never replaced or rekeyed the locks, it may be wise to consider doing this for extra security. Here are some things you need to know about rekeying and replacing locks.

Rekeying Locks

When you rekey a lock, the locksmith will come and remove the pins and springs in the lock cylinder and then installs new springs and pins with a new key. Rekeying is one of the easiest methods to changing out the locks for new homeowners. Unless a lock is malfunctioning, locks are usually rekeyed and kept intact. Key control is common when you have rental units and multiple people that move-in and move-out of the property.

Building communities often use a string of single-mastered keyed locks. Following the completion of construction of the home, the locks need to be rekeyed before the owners can move in. Rekeying is needed to remove the master pins from being able to open the home, as these master pins are designed to have low security for builders to come in and out.

If you have dealt with problems with the lock, simply rekeying the lock may be the easiest way to fix it. However, a door handle that is clearly broken will need to be replaced. Most people do not mind rekeying because they do like the look and feel of the existing lock they have. When the locksmith is working on the lock, they may find that there are several problems that need to be addressed such as re lubricating the lock so it opens smoothly without catching.

Replacing Locks

Locks will eventually wear out and you will need to replace them. If you have an older home, consider replacing all the locks to make sure they are updated with modern security measures. Homeowners in a remodel often find lock replacement to be the best way to give the home a fresh look and feel. Hiring a locksmith to replace locks is the best way to make sure the locks and handles are installed correctly. Replacing multiple locks can be time-consuming for homeowners, especially if you haven’t dealt with it before. Many of the newer door handles have updated security protection, which can lead to problems if you do not have the right tools and expertise to install them.

When you have a broken key fob, it usually can be fixed with new batteries or reprogramming. Youtube is a great source to help reprogramming your specific car key fob. The internal computer chip can be broken, which may require dealers to fix it if the locksmith is unable to get you back into the car.

If someone tried to break into your car, you could be dealing with a broken door lock. When someone breaks into your car, they can damage the doors and ignition. Some security alarm systems will prevent the car from being stolen, but there are several cars that do not have the anti-theft devices. In some cases a dealer needs to reset the security alarm that was activated when the car was being stolen.

Modern cars do have unique anti-theft devices, and will often disable the ignition if someone tries to steal the car. The newer smart key devices are beneficial to prevent car theft, but they do cost a lot to replace if they are stolen or lost.
